In 2001, my story of raising funds for a charity begun in Russia. It was a double challenge: very few people were familiar with the concept of raising funds from community and moreover, the money was needed for children with Down syndrome, the least sympathetic cause for Russians. Looking back I understand that in those days we measured life by appeals, charity actions, presentations and many other efforts. To make it successful I had to use every bit of my experience: school teaching, years with non-profit organisation in America, a business-school and much more.
Step by step but surely quantity of efforts turned into quality of work: we’ve built a great team, we’ve learnt how to spent min but get max, we’ve acquired confidence in our future. Some years ago I found myself consulting other charities that also strive for sustainability. One surprising but sad observation on these encounters: highly motivated enthusiasts start charity project with an anticipation that money will be easy to raise because of the good cause. Unfortunately, life proofs different.
Today Russian donors, society and government call for sustainable NGO sector. Non-profits are expected to be equal partners who can be trusted serious funds. NGOs should gain high level of competency and reputation. It is time to learn. That is why in September 2008 I have opened CHARITY SOLUTION consulting.
